Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is SNMA? 

A: Student National Medical Association is a national organization with the mission of supporting underrepresented medical students along their journey through medical school. There are branches across medical schools in the U.S. and Caribbean Islands. There is also an associated undergraduate subcommittee called National Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students, or MAPS.

Q: Who is the target audience for this conference? 

A: We are hoping to target junior and senior high school students, as well as undergraduate college students with any interest in healthcare careers. Our goal is to further expose underrepresented students to fields they would like to know more about.

Q: How much does the registration cost? 

A: Registration fee for all students is $15. Please reach out to us directly if you have any extenuating circumstances. 

​

Q: What are the hours for the conference? 

A: Check-in and breakfast will begin at 9 AM, our first programming will start at 9:00 AM. We expect the conference to conclude by 5:00PM.  

​

Q: Is transportation available to and from the conference? 

A: No, each student who registers must be able to provide their own transportation to make it to Volker Hall at UAB Heersink School of Medicine. 

​

Q: Are my parents allowed to stay with me during the day? 

A: Parents are welcome to drop students off in the morning and pick them up at the end of the conference day. There will be a morning session for parents that you are welcome to attend. ​

​

Q: Do I need to bring anything with me to the conference? 

A: You can bring a notebook and a pen to take notes if you desire, but nothing else is required! We will have supplies for workshops and lunch provided. 

​

Q: Can post-bacc students attend IHS? 

A: Yes! All students, whether current or former, with any interest in healthcare careers are welcome to attend.
 

Q: Can I register a large group of students (50+) for IHS? 

A: Yes! Please contact uabsom@snma.org for more information on how to streamline the registration process for groups over 50+ individuals.

Q: How can community individuals other than students get involved? 

A: SNMA is accepting donations of all kind (monetary, raffle prizes, food). Please reach out to us at uabsom@snma.org for more direct donation information.
